Course Overview

This course is designed to give you a great start to your career. Apprenticeships offer the opportunity for practical experience and training whilst earning a wage and working towards industry-recognised qualifications. This programme is fully funded for 16-18 year olds, and partially funded for the 19+ age group. This Level 2 enhanced vocational programme covers the basics of barbering and is suitable for those working as barbering assistants who are training to become junior barbers. The duties that an apprentice would cover include cutting facial hair, shampoo and conditioning, drying and finishing hair. THERE WILL BE NEW STANDARDS INTRODUCED AS PART OF THE APPRENTICESHIP REFORM ACROSS ALL THE OCCUPATIONAL AREAS FROM 2015.

APPRENTICESHIP FRAMEWORK
The Framework is made up of a number of components. In order to be successful you must complete and achieve all elements.

• MAIN NVQ
The full NVQ Award in Barbering at Level 2 comprising of 8 units which specify the minimum levels of performance required to work as a qualified barber
  
• FUNCTIONAL SKILLS
Level 1 English
Level 1 Maths
      
• EMPLOYMENT RESPONSIBILITIES AND RIGHTS
This is assignment based evidence collection

• PERSONAL LEARNING AND THINKING SKILLS

The programme is delivered in the workplace with College day release to develop the knowledge-based elements of the framework and Functional Skills. You will require a salon uniform, barbering kit and course book for the start of the course. We will provide you with the personal equipment list for you to purchase your own. There is also a £35 fee to cover trips and activities.  You will be required to attend college during July and August.



You will need to compile a portfolio, which will contain all the evidence of your achievements gained throughout the course.  The preparation of your portfolio will need to be completed in your own time, although, your tutor, assessor and workplace trainer will provide guidance and help.

Progression & Career Opportunities

This programme provides you with a basic qualification and the skills necessary to enable you to work in industry as a qualified Barber with possible progression on to becoming a Senior Barber, Salon Manager or a Salon Owner.  Should you wish to join a level 3 programme to develop your creative and technical skills with a view to developing your career in the salon we will be happy to advise you.

Entry Requirements

Candidates will be interviewed as part of the admissions process which will include screening and a trade assessment. Ideally, candidates should have 3 GCSEs at grade C or above, in English, Maths and one other subject.  The successful applicants will be expected to show the personal qualities required for working in the barbering industry.  To enrol you MUST be employed over 30 hours per week in a barber/unisex salon to start an Apprenticeship, please contact us should you need help in finding suitable employment.  Apprentices are paid a wage by the employer.  Your employer is required to give you a contract of employment, which will include holiday entitlement and all other benefits.

In addition to the entry qualifications listed, the offer of a place on the course is subject to the outcomes of initial assessment, which will be taken at the College as part of the admissions process.

Learning Assessment & Support

We want you to achieve to the very best of your ability at CRC. To make this happen we offer both learnng and personal support by specialist staff tailored to meet your specific needs.

Learners will be assessed in the workplace using a variety of methods including observation, practical assessments, questioning, professional discussions, producing a portfolio of competence-based evidence which will include witness testimonials, candidate statements, and photographic evidence. Candidates are also required to sit online examinations in College.
